Highlights from the Video Game expo

There was plenty of dancing in downtown L.A. yesterday, but it wasn’t just for the Lakers championship win. The videogame conference E3 pulled to a close and the big theme was movement. Microsoft unveiled its motion-sensing device, Kinect, and Sony demoed their wand-shaped motion device called the Move. Meanwhile, videogame publishers had a slate of movement games to take advantage of the new technologies. To help you cut through the clutter, here are the top 10 things we saw at this year’s E3.

The biggest buzz was around the Nintendo 3DS, their newest entrant into the handheld gaming arena. The Japanese company demoed the device, which can produce 3-D images without the use of special glasses, alongside some classic titles from their catalog including “Pilotwings,” “Star Fox,” and “Kid Icarus.”

One of my favorite sleeper titles was indie game “Limbo.” Imagine if Fritz Lang and Tim Burton collaborated on a game – that would give you an inkling how the Danish game company behind this release have positioned the game. With stark monochromatic imagery, you control a little boy searching for his little sister. [Watch the trailer here.]

505 Games’ “Naughty Bear” plays exactly as the title suggests. A ruthlessly-teased teddy bear takes revenge on his tormentors. The violence is, of course, cartoony, but there’s something unsettling about a bear wielding an ax. Clearly, this was not designed for children, but, for adults, it’s a lot of fun.

Microsoft’s Kinect device detects movement without the aid of a controller and several games made use of the new technology. My favorite came from Harmonix, the developer of the “Rock Band” franchise. “Dance Central” was incredibly fun as you mimic characters on-screen to shimmy and shake through hits like Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison.” It’s actually a great way to learn how to dance in the privacy of your own home as the game corrects the sway of your hips and the movement of your feet.

“LittleBigPlanet 2” could prove to be instrumental to inspiring a generation of young game designers. Media Molecule, the game’s developers, added a host of new features to enable players to create their own levels including circuit boards and controllable AI characters. Alex Evans, the studio’s technical director, showed off some of the surprising things their fan community had come up with such as 3D shooter created in 2D space. [Trailer]

Thatgamescompany debuted their new title “Journey” as the follow-up to the popular “Flower” and “Flow.” The Santa Monica-based studio is known for their ethereal, emotional titles and their new one is no different as you play as a character wandering through a desert expanse.

Microsoft Game Studios showed off a string of highly-anticipated titles including “Gears of War 3” and “Fable 3” from popular game designers Cliff Bleszinski and Peter Molyneux, respectively. I took a stab at the new “Beast Mode” which lets you play as the game’s antagonists, the Locust.

Although there wasn’t much to play for “Portal 2,” the video that Valve Software showed off looked fantastic – and funny. The first game, which had you play as a the subject of an experiment battling an evil robot mind called GLaDOS, was a surprise hit and birthed a cult following. In the followup, GLaDOS has returned. Two of my adolescent favorites are making a return to the Nintendo Wii. “NBA Jam” was one of favorite sports games and now EA has revamped it with modern players, but with the same outlandish play. “GoldenEye 007” was one of the most popular games ever upon its release in 1997 and Activision rebooted the franchise for release.

I got a chance to try “Epic Mickey,” the new take on the magic mouse from Disney Interactive Studios. The game played quite well as I wielded a magic paintbrush against my foes and controlled different objects in the world. The “Steamboat Willy” level, based on the classic animated short, was quite amusing as well.

Jamin Brophy-Warren, beside being a friend of Speakeasy and a stand-up guy, is a editor of Kill Screen, a cool new magazine about videogames.
